I've written a few novellas after and I have an itch to write a novella version of the short story. I have done so with two short stories, so a third time should be doable. I need to wait for the main character to speak to me again.
Certainly sounds right to me. My own short story to novel didn't work out, but that doesn't mean it won't work for you. Just write what the character gives you and see where it goes. The story will be whatever length it wants to if you let it run.
