Cool explanation of the topic. Thanks! I sometimes show something of my WIP to one of my friends, and they always give me feedback... Also, I always want them to say 'that's genius of work!' ... they never do that... (sigh)
Interesting topic. I think that may have played a part in why I stalled out on something I was writing and had shared some with my first reader friend because she wanted to share the beginning of her new story to get input on a specific thing. Mostly her comments tend to be along the lines of "I really like this character." But she made one small comment along the lines of "I don't see any reason he would doubt her here." And in retro reading your post now, I think that one comment did embed in my head. It took me a month before I felt like moving ahead with the story.
I certainly don't think less of you for having and then sharing your experiences to help us growing writers find our way in the dark a little better. Pointing out that there is a stone or root or branch hanging down in the way, just a bit up the road, doesn't stop the WITD journey, it just helps to make it a little less painful!
I learned not to show my WIP to anyone, because I would always go off the rails and start changing everything, and it would make me very sad, because it wasn't the "right" story, anymore, but I couldn't change it back, either. So, the story would just sit, neglected after that.
It's the same sort of thing as plotting for me. Only then it's my own brain telling me what to write to make it match the plot. All of that is story-killers for me.
Yup. Back in the day when I was still more susceptible to external input and the critical mind, I finally learned to hit Save As and then add an A or 2 or something to the file name before making any changes. Especially if any change I made caused that little feeling of impending nausea in my gut.

Excellent example. Funny how as light a comment as that can derail everything for awhile, and completely unintentionally.
