Quote of the Day
"The greatest gift is not being afraid to question." Ruby Dee
I've long said the most important group of words in the English language is the question. Not because it leads to an answer, but because it leads to more questions. Yer Uncle Harv
Anthology?
Today I'll conduct the final copyedit of an excellent story that was submitted for the Echoes of Hemingway contest and anthology. Then I'll probably begin putting the anthology together.
If you received an edit, you have choices:
You may accept all edits (let me know).
You may accept some edits, decline others, and resubmit the updated version of your story via email attachment (let me know).
You may decline all edits (let me know), and I'll run your story as-is in the anthology.
But the main point here is to remember to let me know.
I hope to publish the anthology toward the end of the month. Everyone whose work is included will get a free copy.
I Get Emails
A writer (and reader) recently sent me an email in which she talked about another writer named Gale Wilhelm.
"[T]he book was We Too Are Drifting, a delightful short book about a woman artist falling in love with another woman, and you know what? I love it....
"I love the style, I love the way Wilhelm describes the city of San Francisco, the way she describes being in love, the way she writes her dialogue, the way she goes from scene to scene....
"The whole time I [was reading], I was analyzing Wilhelm's technique. In fact I want to go back and analyze it more.... her writing is gorgeous. It makes me giddy with excitement.... She' s an author I wish had published more work."
That's extremely high praise. If you have trouble writing good description, or even if you think you don't, you might want to search for and find some of Wilhelm's novels and read them to see whether there's something you can learn.
Caution: You're fiction writers, so please don't be put off by genre. Good writing is good writing.
Valuable Links
Another writer, in response to my recent post about Writing Sex said maybe I could write a post on fight scenes.
So here are a few posts you might be interested in:
Topic: Writing Action Scenes (from April 2019, and I repeated much of this information 5 years later in Writing Better Fiction)
Topic: Paragraphing (from February 2019)
Just as a reminder, you can always visit the Journal website and enter your search terms in the Search box in the sidebar and find information on any number of topics. I suggest enclosing your search terms in quotation marks.
While I'm on the topic of high-action scenes, back on June 5 I got around 210 of my best buddies in a room and asked them a question: Love Live-Action Bits? Only one person responded. If you'd care to chime in, check out Love Live-Action Bits?
Talk with you again tomorrow.
